Overview: Late Night with Conan O'Brien

About.com Rating 4.5

The Bottom Line

For my money, there isn’t a hipper traditional talk show on the air. But be forewarned, Conan’s for the nerdy set. If you like beer with your talk show host, turn to Jimmy Kimmel. But if you enjoy broad humor in The Simpsons vein (after all, O’Brien was a writer and producer on that show), you’ll love Late Night.

Pros

  • Hip
  • Hilarious
  • Hosted by the funniest redhead since Lucille Ball
  • A talk show for the nerdy set

Cons

  • A talk show for the nerdy set
  • Conan often dominates interviews

Description

  • Airs Monday through Friday at 12:35 a.m. EST on NBC
  • Hosts a slew of off-the-wall characters, including The Gassy Weiner
  • SNL favorite Amy Poehler played Andy Richter's little sister
  • In one skit, Richter "accidently" ends up on the set of The Today Show totally nude
  • Conan is a distant cousin of comedian Dennis O'Leary
  • Conan was a producer and writer of both The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live
  • The first guest ever was John Goodman, who received a medal signifying the event

Guide Review - Overview: Late Night with Conan O'Brien

I remember when Conan first took over for David Letterman. It was a difficult show to watch. Besides the fact that no one really knew who this guy was (an Emmy-award winning writer and producer of both The Simpsons and Saturday Night Live, at the time), his delivery was nervous and – truthfully – nasally. And the humor – well, no one really got it.

A couple years later, Conan is a sensation. Who knew? Long-time fans, for one, who have enshrined the redhead with all manner of accolades, including a web site dedicated to cartoons depicting the talk show host fighting a bear. That’s the kinda humor I’m talking about.

Over the years, Conan’s guests have grown from strictly “D-list” celebrities to A-listers and good friends. His bandleader since his 1993 debut has been E-Street Band drummer Max Weinberg. Andy Richter, Conan’s lovable – and incredibly talented – sidekick exited the show in 2000.

Of the many characters that have populated the show, none has become more popular than Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. The cheap, rubber puppet has made guest appearances in movies and television, lambasting just about anyone he encounters.
