A mini-feud has erupted between the two, and it has steadily grown in size since Monday evening, when Letterman made questionable jokes about New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez, former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, and – allegedly -- Alaska Governor Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow (Letterman says they were jokes referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin).
During her interview with Matt Lauer, Palin said Letterman’s jokes were an extension of disparaging remarks about women our American culture finds acceptable. She backed-up her remark with an e-mail she received from a woman offended by Letterman’s jokes.
Palin also said that Letterman’s explanation that the jokes were referring to 18-year-old Bristol Palin was merely a “convenient excuse.” She said people should rise above such remarks and innuendo.
Host Matt Lauer may have caught Palin in a double-standard, however, when he asked about the Palins’ official response to Letterman’s invitation for Palin and daughter Willow to come on the show. In the response, the Palins’ spokesperson suggested that Willow would be afraid to be around Letterman.
Palin fumbled with her response, suggesting that it was really a statement saying that Willow would be so mad that she would take Letterman to task.
