Oprah No Longer Popular

Thursday May 29, 2008

That headline got your attention, didn’t it? Well, it’s not far off what a lot of keyboard pounders – you can call them critics – have been writing the last week.

The truth is, Oprah Winfrey is slumping – just a bit. Her daytime program, The Oprah Winfrey Show, has seen a decline in viewership – about 500,000 – in the last year. Subscriptions to “O, The Oprah Magazine” are off by 10 percent. Oprah’s Big Give gave a lot to ABC at the outset, but the reality program couldn’t keep its audience, losing a third by the show’s end.

What’s the reason? Everyone says her support for possible presidential candidate Barak Obama is the cause.

C’mon now. Really?

It couldn’t be that, for once in her life, Oprah’s extended her brand just a little too far, could it?

Or that many viewers today are calling Ellen DeGeneres their favorite daytime talk show host?

Might it not be the fact that The Big Give was merely a big dud, seeing as how most reality TV show viewers expect a little arguing now and then? And maybe a misdemeanor or two?

It could be – and this is what I’m voting for – people are just a little tired of Oprah right now. It happens. Lots of TV shows dip a bit before coming back strong (usually it’s the dip that puts the fire in the pants of creators to shake things up a bit).

Obama? No.

‘O’ boring? Maybe.

Her show is just OK. Too many celebrities who don’t make interesting TV watching, at least for me, too much about weight (it’s so boring and tiring) with Dr. Oz, and when she speaks like a literary critic about books like The Secret and A New Earth and has classes to ‘teach’ people, I just switch quickly and don’t go back. Both of those books are just mediocre at best and being on the NY Times best seller list doesn’t necessarily mean they are worth reading. Lots of followers in this world. And many of them follow Oprah, believe it or not!!
Oprah has done and is continuing to do lots of wonderful things for others and for this I commend her. However, it is time to either find someone new and interesting at this time to fill that slot or produce some really good TV for once – most of the TV is poorly done and I don’t find it worth watching at all these days.
