Overview:

Turning on Tyra Banks is a bit like turning on a daytime talk show from the 1990s – larger than life personality and topics that either captivate or (more likely) titillate. Tyra follows the usual daytime talk show format – sparse set, exuberant host, and guests that fit the day’s topic.

Since the show's debut in 2005, it has steadily progressed toward a more sensationalized format. The show’s focus on women’s issues has turned toward women’s issues with prurient interest, especially during sweeps months, that time when television stations set advertising rates based on show ratings. One such show asked audience members to show off their personalities by showing off their underwear.

Tyra’s guests are often everyday people in extraordinary – sometimes unbelievable – circumstances. But the model/host also interviews celebrities and newsmakers. And though it is often chided for its outlandishness, it must be doing something right. It won a daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Informative in 2008.
