Montel’s First Job & The Early Years :
After high school, Montel joined the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Sampson. His military career spanned 22 years, and he received a number of medals during that time, including the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, two Navy Expeditionary Medals, two Humanitarian Service Medals, a Navy Achievement Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals and two Meritorious Service Medals.
Becoming a Talk Show Host:
The Montel Williams Show debuted in 1991. Montel has served as host since its debut. It’s followed the path of many talk shows of its time, including a stint of over-the-top guests, prurient subject matter and questionable authenticity.
In the late 90s, Montel shifted his focus, softening his show and taking on more serious topics. It has become a more inspirational and thoughtful program because of this, though it does delve into some gray areas, including regular guest Sylvia Browne’s paranormal offerings.
What Does the Future Hold?:
Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, Montel has actively championed for research and cure. He is also a champion of medical marijuana, which the talk show hosts admits to using and applauds for helping him get through intense pain due to his illness. His career efforts seem to be turning more toward non-profit and notable spokesperson in recent years, though his turn as an actor has also grown.
