Bio Briefs: Hosts of 'The Best Damn Sports Show Period'

The four-man team of Chris Rose, Rob Dibble, John Salley and Rodney Peete make up one of the most unique sets of talk show hosts to appear on late night television. The quartet, a basball player, basketball player, football player, and sportscaster The Best Damn Sports Show Period (BDSSP) on Fox Sports Net, and dish dirt on all manner of competitive games.

Chris Rose:

A native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, born Jan. 27, 1971, Chris Rose is the quintessential sports analyst. A Miami (of Ohio) University grad, Chris used his degree in journalism and English to launch a successful broadcasting career, first as a local reporter and anchor in Reno, Nevada, and Cincinnati, Ohio. From there, Rose leapt to CNN, and became a sports anchor and reporter.

Fox Sports Net nabbed Rose in 2000, assigning him to the National Sports Report, where he covered the 2000 and 2001 Players Championship and the 2000 NCAA Final Four. In 2001, he became host of BDSSP. Except for a very brief period, he’s hosted continuously since then.

Rob Dibble:

Born Robert Keith on Jan. 24, 1964, Rob Dibble is best known as one of the best damn pitchers the Cincinnati Reds have ever seen. He was named co-MVP of the National League Championship Series in 1990 after throwing five scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates, striking out 10 and recording a save. The Reds would go on to win the World Series that year.

After retiring from baseball, Dibble began his broadcasting career, first with Fox Sports Net, then over to ESPN as a baseball analyst, and then back to Fox Sports Net, joining the BDSSP team. He also co-hosts The Show on XM Radio, a radio talk show about baseball.

John Salley:

The former NBA basketball star was born on May 16, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology College of Management in 1988 before beginning his NBA career in 1986, first playing for the Detroit Pistons, and then the Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. He’s also played for the Athens, Greece, professional team, the Panathinaikos BC.

Salley first retired in 1995, after a 72-game, record-breaking season with the Chicago Bulls, playing alongside James Edwards, Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan. He came out of retirement in 1999, to play alongside Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal on the L.A. Lakers, helping lead that team to its first of three consecutive NBA championships.

His foray into the talk show world begin with a little watched late night talk show in the 1990s. Today, he is one of the signature hosts of BDSSP, and has also hosted NBC’s NBA Showtime and a morning radio program, The John Salley Block Party.

Rodney Peete:

Born on March 16, 1966, in Mesa, Ariz., Rodney Peete graduated from Shawnee Mission South High School in Overland Park, Kansas, before launching his football career at The University of Southern California. There, he was the first player ever to win the Johnny Unitas Award, awarded to college’s best senior quarterback. He also won two Rose Bowls while with USC, in 1988 and 1989.

He was drafted by the Detroit Lions and played 16 years in the National Football League. Peete would also play for the Dallas Cowboys, Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers before retiring in 2004.

Right from his football career, Peete has been a part of BDSSP.

  • Chris Rose lives in L.A. with his wife and children.

  • Rose was briefly dropped from BDSSP when it changed formats (emulating a celebrity talk show, with host Tom Arnold) in 2004.

  • Rob Dibble was known as one of the Reds’ “Nasty Boys” in 1990.

  • Dibble has also played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox.

  • John Salley’s famous quote after retiring – again – once winning a championship with the L.A. Lakers: “I’ve won four championship rings, with three different teams, in three different decades and two different millenniums.” .

  • Salley also starred alongside Will Smith and Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys I and II.

  • Rodney Peete is married to actress Holly Robinson, one of the stars of the 1990s Fox hit show 21 Jump Street.
