Oprah’s Book Club Checklist 2004

All the Books Blessed by Oprah in 2004

By Thomas Tennant, About.com

In 1996, The Oprah Winfrey Show introduced Oprah’s Book Club – and the publishing world has never been the same. Since Oprah selected her first work, The Deep End of the Ocean by Jacquelyn Mitchard, books – fiction, non-fiction, troubled memoirs – have skyrocketed to popularity. And the episodes in which Oprah discussed the book, typically with the author present, are some of the most popular interviews the talk show host has conducted.

Below, you will find titles chosen in 2008:

1. ‘The Good Earth’ by Pearl S. Buck

An early novel about the culture of a small Chinese village.

2. ‘Anna Karenina’ by Leo Tolstoy

A tale set in early Russia about a young woman and her unhappy family.

3. ‘The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter’ by Carson McCullers

About deaf John Singer and the people he encounter in a small mill town in the 1930s.

4. ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’ by Gabriel García Márquez

An epic tale about a family’s struggle in the fictional town of Macondo.
