Overview: Jimmy Kimmel Live!

About.com Rating 3

By Thomas Tennant, About.com

The Bottom Line

A relative newcomer, having debuted in 2003, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has been successful for ABC, which, until then, had searched for a counterpoint to David Letterman and Jay Leno. The format is traditional, but the comedy is geared to a younger, male demographic. This is most likely due to Kimmel’s fans from Comedy Central, where he created and hosted The Man Show and Win Ben Stein’s Money, both notorious for their locker room tone.

Pros

  • Laid back and informal
  • Appeals to the male demographic

Cons

  • Humor can be low-brow to the point of boring
  • Still feels like its finding its place in late night
  • Time varies station to station

Description

  • Airs at 12:05 a.m. EST on ABC, though check your local listings as this varies.
  • Bobcat Goldthwait has been directing episodes since 2005.
  • Debuted after the 2003 Super Bowl and celebrated its anniversary after the 2006 Super Bowl
  • Has hosted live shows in Detroit, Mich
  • Faked a snake bite in a bit dedicated to ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy

Guide Review - Overview: Jimmy Kimmel Live!

You know what? Sometimes you gotta give in to the low-brow humor. So what’s not to like about Jimmy Kimmel Live!?

Plenty, if you’re talking 2003 and talking to the fans that made Kimmel a smash on Comedy Central with his Man Show. Kimmel toned it down for the network and many fans retired their beer mugs and secret handshakes.

But time has once-again proven the Emmy-winning Kimmel right, as his show continues to gain an audience and grow into something akin to Conan’s first years in the talk-show business. The cast of wacky characters, such as “Uncle Frank” Potenza, “Cousin Sal” Iacono and Jake Byrd, the over enthusiastic nom de plume of comedic actor Anthony Barbieri.

Kimmel has one of the most eclectic house bands, around, too, which is a point that can’t be stressed enough. Cleto and the Cletones are a half-step hipper than The Max Weinberg Seven. What a wonder to see those two groups in a battle of the bands. Cleto Escobedo is the band leader, a childhood friend of Kimmel and a professional jazz musician who plays the alto, tenor, and soprano saxophones.
