Chelsea Lately was born out of The Chelsea Handler Show, comedienne Handler's half-hour sketch comedy program on E!. Once that show was cancelled, Handler was approached to do a late night talk show.

The show debuted in 2007 and has kept to the same formula: a short monologue by Handler then a spiked coffee klatch of celebrity guests gossiping about pop culture subjects (sex, annoying celebrities, and so forth). Afterward, Handler typically sits down and chats with a celebrity guest.

Interspersed in the mayhem are comedy segments and silly moments with Handler's perennial sidekick, Chuy Bravo.

The show celebrated its 500th episode in April 2010.

On May 28, 2014, E! announced that Chelsea Lately will end on Aug. 26, 2014.

Popular Segments:

  • Judge Lately: During which Handler acts as judge, moderating everyday problems with outrageous resolutions.
  • Staff Book Club: The Chelsea Lately staff attempts to discuss the week's novel, but inevitably descend into mundane or ribald topics.
  • Chelsea's Blessing: Up pops a graphic whenever Handler shows praise about a story or opinion.
