Colbert Lands in Iraq, Scores Talk Show First

By , About.com GuideJune 8, 2009

Follow me on:

For several weeks, Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, has slyly indicated that he would take his show to the Mideast. He couldn’t say when. He couldn’t say where. But now we know.

Starting tonight, The Colbert Report will broadcast four shows from the heart of Baghdad at the U.S. military’s Camp Victory – lovingly titled Operation Iraqi Stephen: Going Commando.

The field trip is in partnership with the USO. The show’s mission: entertain the troops. And it includes a first: the first taped, non-news talk show fully produced and broadcast from Iraq.

This week’s episodes include a visit from President Barack Obama via video (in effect making this the second talk show a sitting president has visited – at least virtually - The Tonight Show being the first). Shows will this week will feature members of the military, several “special guest” video appearances, and a tour of one of former dictator Saddam Hussein’s palaces.

Oh, and you don’t want to miss Colbert receiving an official military haircut.
