Letterman Questions McCain Bail-Out

Thursday September 25, 2008

“What are you going to do if you're elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We've got a guy like that now!”

That was the tail-end of a comical drubbing Late Show host David Letterman gave presidential candidate Senator John McCain after McCain cancelled his Wednesday night appearance on the program.

Letterman mentioned several times that the recent actions of the Senator seemed incompatible with the person he knew. He suggested that maybe McCain was taking too much direction from his campaign advisors.

"I think someone's putting something in his Metamucil,” Dave said.

And while fill-in guest Keith Olbermann was chatting with Dave, Dave learned that McCain was, in fact, nearby, taping a segment with CBS News’ Katie Couric. They cut to live feed of the Senator getting patted down with make-up.

In response, Dave called out, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”

Letterman teased McCain with his Top Ten List as well:

Top Ten Questions People are Asking John McCain

  • 10. "I just contributed to your campaign – how do I get a refund?"
  • 9. "It's Sarah Palin -- does this mean I'm Pars'dent?"
  • 8. "Can't you solve this by selling some of your homes?"
  • 7. "Hi, this is Clay Aiken. Is McCain single?"
  • 6. "Do you still think the fundamentals of our economy are strong, genius?"
  • 5. "Are you doing all this just to get out of going on Letterman?"
  • 4. "What would Matlock do?"
  • 3. "Hillary here -- my schedule is free Friday night"
  • 2. "Is this just an excuse to catch up on napping?"
  • 1. "This is President Bush -- what's all this trouble with the economy?"
