Whoopi Quits! (Smoking)

I had no idea Whoopi Goldberg was as smoker. None at all. And I guess I’m a little surprised. Don’t know why. Millions of Americans still light up now and again (and again and again).
But yesterday on The View she announced that she’s kicking the habit.
And good for her!
Whoopi’s making her campaign to quit a public affair, one viewer of The View can follow along to (and maybe join her in her struggle). Through a series of weekly segments, we’ll watch Whoopi as she reveals for the first time how long she has smoked, why she smokes, how much she smokes and why she has finally decided to quit.
Here’s the rundown for those who want to follow her journey – or join her in kicking the habit:
- October 15 - The official kick-off of "Whoopi's Kickin' Butts"
- October 23 - Different techniques for quitting. Whoopi selects her method.
- October 30 - PSAs encouraging people to quit smoking. Do they work?
- November 9 - How smoking affects the human body
- November 15 - The View will mark The American Cancer Society's "Great American Smokeout" as they check-in with Whoopi and monitor her progress.
Will you be quitting with Whoopi? Leave a comment and let us know!

Whoopi,
Love you on the view, it now seems the sheriff has come to town and she garners the respect of law and order. I enjoy your presence and your opinions on the view.
In regards to your smoking and your readiness to quit the tobacco habit, I applaud you. I am a tobacco prevention coordinator here in Cass County NE. I take great pride in educating youth how the tobacco companies target them and that is why they fall victim to this vicious and harmful habit.. Just so you fully understand my role I am a former smoker who had 3 attempts at quitting until I finally found success. For a girl who grew up in Bayside, Queens smoking was a rite of passage at Benjamin Cardozo High School in the Nineteen Seventies. We are all so much more educated on the hazards of tobacco either first hand on being the smoker or by the effects of second hand smoke.
You had mentioned on the show today that you viewed a commercial with children and it stated they needed to quit smoking, I am running that same commercial here in Nebraska because it has great impact and truly gets the notice of the audience by just how adorable these kids are.
If you do need any help at all, and I am sure you have the best people at your disposal, I want you to feel free to call upon my tobacco treatment services at any time. It would be my honor and privilege to work with someone like yourself who can have a positive influence on greatly improving the health of tens of thousands of people with your star power.
I truly hope to hear from you, please call at 402 -740-8260
Warmest regards,

OK Whoopi, let’s do this. It’s long over due for me too. I’ll be 53 in December and no one else smokes but me. Hmmmmm. Will be watching/recording if not home, The View so I can keep up with you. What are you going to use? Cold Turkey for me i think, GOOD LUCK to us both. By the way, LOVE YOU! The Color Purple is my all time favorite movie along with It’s a Wonderful Life.
GO WHOOPI!!! After many tries of quitting smoking myself, I’ve finally made it now for 6 1/2 months!! It’s the hardest thing in my life that I’ve done! I will always miss them, therefore I will say I’m addicted, always will be, and for the rest of my life…I will be IN RECOVERY!! I have gotten this far only by the GRACE OF MY LORD JESUS CHRIST!
I will be watching and praying for you, Whoopi. God Bless You!
PLEASE MAKE THIS YOUR LAST TIME FOR QUITTING, I BEG OF YOU. I am undergoing my second bout of chemo after being in remission for 6 months for lung cancer. I went through all of last year with chemo and the first part of this year with radiation. God is still with me giving me HIS STRENGTH. If HE wants me to go HOME to be with HIM, I’ve already accepted this. Please, Whoopi, get a CT SCAN, AND A PET SCAN!!!
With many prayers, and much LOVE….. Donna
Whoopi- soooo glad that you are trying to quit. I am (only) 26 but I kicked the habit after 6 years. It was easy for me because I put them down when I found out I was pregnant. I have to admit that I still smoke when I drink, which is only on occasion, and no I am not pregnant anymore. Anyway to get to the point- one of my friends moms quit after about 30 years and she just replaced cigs with a straw. When she wanted one she would puff on a straw instead of a cig. Hope this helps you in some way.
With love from a new fan of the view and a longtime fan of you- Selena
CHANTIX is a new miracle rx!
My mom and father in-law both quit and stayed quit. IT is being called the miracle cure by pharmacists!!!!!!!
Please tell Whoopie about it and all your smoking pals!!
I am so excited about Whoopi quitting smoking. I am also quitting smoking. My quit date is October 18, 2007. I started taking CHANTIX (smoking cessation medication) on October 11, 2007. I am 46 years old and have smoked for almost 30 years. After numerous attempts throughout the years. I’ve made up my mind to kick butt! I have a 59 year old sister who’s also quitting with me. How cool is it to be accompanied by Whoopi while we KICK BUTT?!
GOOD FOR YOU!! I did the same 8 years ago, had smoked 35 years!I got pills from the doctor and got through it. It is tough so don’t hesitate to get help!
watch what you snack on, I gained 45 pounds, but I still feel better! Every
smoker loves a cigarette but there comes a time when it’s a matter of health!! Good Luck—Pat
Whoopi, I quit October 3, after smoking for 40 years. I am using the Commit Lozenge. I will be DVRing the View to hear about your own progress. Call if you ever want to chat. It’s really difficult, but not as hard as I thought. The important thing here is that I am making the effort. Good luck!
Hi Whoopi, just wanted to leave what I hope will be a helpful tip in your road to kicking butts. I stopped smoking when I was 19yrs old. I got mad with smoking. I had just moved to a new area away from my family and fellow smokers and I couldn’t purchase loose cigarettes and no one wanted to let me buy one from them. I was disgusted with the whole situation and said the hell with it. While I know your situation won’t be exactly like mine (because you have the money to buy a pack whenever you want). You still can get mad with the whole smoking hoopla like I did, so good luck!!!
Dear Whoopi,
I smoked for almost 30 yrs and was unsuccessful at quitting many times. At 46, without warning or family history, I had a massive heart attack. I was not expected to live. But 8 days later I woke from the coma. I thankfully was a non-smoker from that day forward. I feel some guilt because I didn’t go thru the wrestling with the demon that I had before, but no matter. I’ve never even wanted a smoke since then. In 10 years!!
BUT! How lucky was I? Please, Whoopi and anyone else reading this, don’t let this happen to you. Please stop before it’s too late, You can do it!
Whoopi, Good luck to you. I am 53yrs of age and smoked for 40 years. I have been smoke free since May. I’ve tried a
thousand times over the years. The way I did it with Welbrutin, Nicotrol patches and 10 days in Hawaii. I came back smoke free. I think my body was done. Once I got over the first month of Nicotine withdraws, It got easier. It also is mad easier for me because I need a liver transplant. They won’t put me on the Transplant UNOS List if I am smoking. I feel I was on the verge of Envazima because I get very winded at times. Good Luck to you. I wish you the best. Love Diana
Yeah for the Whoop!! I’m proud of ya and I think by going public, you are going to make an amazing impact on thousands of people coz you’re so loved! I’m 50 years old and have been smoking for 38 years. My husband and I are quitting on November 1, so hopefully, I’ll be completely smoke-free for six weeks when you make your final commitment on December 15! You go girl!!
You go girl! My husband and I quit yesterday, 29 October, as part of the Chantix program. We’re both 52 and have been smoking for years! We’ve tried before, and it’s time for it to work for us! We’re rooting for you and praying for you and ourselves! I want to enjoy my retirement, when that day comes, and this is not the way! Good luck!
I smoked for 52 years & finaly kicked the habit 8/23/2007. It was definately the hardest thing I ever did. After trying everything else unsuccessfully (patches, medication & cold turkey) I had one laser treatment through http://www.laserfreelasercenter.com/ & have not had the urge to smoke since the treatment.
Whoopi,
I smoked for 49 years.I tried quitting years ago.The patch did not work, the gum did not work, cold turkey,oh no,nothing worked.I now have been smoke free for nearly 6 months after finding something new on the market to quit smoking. It’s called Chantix and it works without making you crazy for a cigarette.and makes it easy to quit,no withdrawal pains.Try it,you’ll be amazed!!
Whoopie! I’m With You Girl! I quit on October 16,2007 after 33 years of smoking for my 50th birtday present to myself. I’m using Chantix and it helps plus the dreams from it are like Movie Of The Week!. Been 16 days today and I have already saved $86.00 by not smoking. Blood pressure dropped tremendously and I’ve lost 2 pounds instead of gaining…only positives from here on out!
Dear Whoopie,
I am delighted you’ve quit smoking!!! I too loved you so very much in The Color Purple and ever since then. My Dad died of infections acquired while undergoing chemo for live and lung cancer. I don’t want that happening to you or any of my other good friends out there. Please continue to stay tobacco-free.
Jed
I’ve been smoking for 50 years and I still love it. If you can try to kick the habit on December 15th I’ll try also.Love you so much because you are the real deal. Never change Whoopie
I’ve made a committment to stop smoking this year after smoking off and on for over 40 years. I’ve given myself 6 months. I love Whoopi even more now that I know we can do something together. I will be watching her progress. My husband said he’ll quite too. I’ve already purchased my last pack of cigarettes! Good Luck Whoopi!
Glad to read thatWhoopi has given up smoking.God has been kind to her that she has understood the effects smoking well on time before things could take a turn for the worst.
I have been listening to you say that you plan to quit. I have decided to join you and quit, too. Tell Sherri that I liked the way she jumped on those chicken wings and showed everyone how it is done! Jo Jo
I will be quitting with you on November 15th. I’ve been a smoker for 46 years and I will be using Commit lozengers and will power. good luck to you !!! I know we can do it.
Whoopi I quit and am using the patch . I have used it before . It works unless you take it off. I have to tape it to keep it on soemtimes but hey. I quit many times through 07. And this time I stoppped as of the jan 13th . Today makes 3 days yeah for me. The patch helps me not to eat in between meals and keeps me from being a bitch . It keeps you calm as it says. Without it I freak out and turn into a monster. Its great you just have to get on it . if you can do it for 3 days. You keep your self and areas around you smelling nice. Surround yourself with smell goods you like . Vanilla is a good smell. Your favorite perfumes and lotions and bath gels to bathe with is good. Please work hard whoopi we are with you out here too.
Im age 45 female. I started smoking at age 13 . I cought your segment on kicking butts. I find the nicoderm cq patch really greater
than anythiing else. I tried the welbutrin and it made my blood pressure high. I quit it. I used the in haler it works when your in doors. But I quit it. I perfer the patch. IT DOESNT STICK TO GOOD SO TAPE WORKS. to keep it there. I take it off at night when I sleep. Because I didnt smoke when I slept right ? So it works ok. But I put it back on in the morning after I eat right away. Because thats when your recepters want that smoke.
I shower first before i PUT ON THE PATCH.Dont use any lotion on the area you will put your patch on . And I shower with smell good and Im ready to go.
Whoopi if I can do it one time before 3 days short of 30 days you can too. I had it made I LIT UP FOR GRINS NOT BECAUSE i HAD A CRAVING. iTS A SHAME TOO. If I would not have lit up at that time I would have made it one year 1/2 about this time.
Im here withy ou whoopi keep going . We are. But if you do go back to smoking let us know you fell off the wagon wont you. Theres nothiing wrong with that . And its being honest with your fans at the same time to.
Thanks for letting me rant love you whoopi god bless you.
