Rosie, Ripa Exchange 'Views'
Regarding Live Incident with Clay Aiken

Tuesday November 21, 2006

Is there a morning talk show feud brewing between Kelly Ripa and Rosie O’Donnell? After Tuesday morning’s call-in clash on The View, one might think so.

To tell it right, we have to step back to Friday, when American Idol runner up, Clay Aiken, was a guest co-host on Live with Regis and Kelly. Throughout the episode, the banter between Ripa and Aiken seemed tense, but not terse. Then during an interview with Dancing with the Stars winners Emmitt Smith and Cheryl Burke, Aiken covered Ripa’s mouth with his hand in an apparent attempt to get a word in.

Ripa, reportedly uncomfortable with the contact, rebuked Aiken, saying, “I don’t know where that hand’s been.”

Aiken's almost assuredly off the guest host short list, and all is said and done, right? Well, not quite yet.

When Regis returned to Live on Monday, Ripa shared with him her view of what happened. “My mother always told me if you don’t have anything nice to say, you shouldn’t say anything at all,” Ripa said.

And, apparently, that set Rosie off.

Tuesday morning on The View, Rosie commented on the incident and Ripa’s comment to Aiken, labeling it homophobic. (It should be noted at this point that Aiken has never publicly revealed his sexual preference.)

Upset that Rosie labeled it such, Ripa called into the show to explain that she felt his actions were out-of-bounds and rude – and as a mother with three kids, she really was concerned about hygiene.

Rosie stuck by her view of the incident, and both hosts were extremely cordial to one another and assuredly remain friends. Guest co-host Sherri Shepherd mentioned that had Aiken been co-hosting with Regis, he never would have reached over and covered his mouth. Ripa said it was neither here nor there since it was “in the past and water under the bridge.”

And it’s not over yet! Clay will chat with Tyra Banks on Wednesday, and Tyra promises that Clay will “truthfully answer the one question all of America wants to know.”

Unless this was pre-recorded, we can assume there will be plenty of questions about Kelly and "the hand," as well.

Wednesday on Live with Regis and Kelly:

  • Kristin Davis
  • Chris Daugherty

… and on The View:

  • Maura Tierney

Kelly
I agree with you completely about your dispute with Rosie O’Donnell. I enjoy seeing you and Regis every morning.

I don’t agree with Kelly Ripa..She lied to Rosie about why she reacted to the hand situation..I hope she doesn’t lose this job..her acting skills are terrible..They only show the commercials she’s made on stations such as the FOOD NETWORK

I agree with Clay Aiken. I would rather see him on the show than Kelly. She is the rude one. I think she interrupts guests and co-hosts. I am sure her children spread more germs than Clay. I don’t enjoy watching her at all. I would rather see a different co-host with Regis. She is annoying to watch and listen.

I agree with Kelly, as for acting, I think shes good, loved hope & faith..Rosie is the big mouth..I am not against gays, but, Rosie just always has to stick her foot in her mouth. I quit watching the view when rosie came along..I`ve been told she has been giving gifts to people..Trying to beat Ellen I believe..Don`t think you can do it Ro..Ellen has you beat a 100% at least she doesn`t rub her homosexuality in your face…do not hate gays..just do not believe in it..The Bible tells me so

Kelly, Clay was not only RUDE, but disrespectful. His bantering right from the get go was inappropriate. I was put off long before he put his hand over you mouth…THAT however, was truly uncalled for. Did he forget who the host was?????

They were going back & forth… What makes her banter any more appropriate than his? If you cant take it then dont dish it….

I think the show should be named Rosie’s view. She obviously intimadates her co-host’s by their sitting by meekly while Rosie made her outrageous comment about Ripa. The other co-host were too scared to speak up for Ripa because they too feared being labeled Homophobic. Hopefully Walters will give her the boot after her 1 year contract is up.

Who told Rosie it’s her show. Why don’t the other women take the show back. It becoming a platform for gay rights only and the other women are afraid to say or do anything. Take the show back girls.

(9) Dana Giro says:

I think Chet should have kept his hand over her mouth forever. She is so self-involved and artificial sweet it is sickening. I wish they would get a down to earth co-host. Regis used to be a real person but being with Kathy Lee and Kelly he is loosing his appeal. I have watched him for years when he was great.
