Thomas' Talk Shows Blog

Is it Sweeps Already?

Wednesday November 15, 2006

Ever have a week just get away from you?

If your answer is “Yes,” then I’m going to take that as meaning my excuse for not blogging the last two days has passed muster. And what a week to miss a blog or two!

I mean, Tyra Banks joins About Talk Shows and the very next week she hosts a show in which the audience strips down to their skivvies! Now if that doesn’t scream November sweeps, I don’t know what does.

With only two and a half days left in the week, let me take just a paragraph or two to point out what you shouldn’t miss tonight, tomorrow and Friday. At least this belated blog can be good for something!

Wednesday Night

  • It’s hip to be square – and even hipper to be a fan of Christopher Guest’s many mokumentaries, from Waiting for Guffman to Best in Show. Guest’s following is akin to Woody Allen’s or Joel and Ethan Coens’. Guest and his regular comedy troupe – Eugene Levy, Catherine O’Hara, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean, among many others – will debut For Your Consideration this week. He ad libs his way through the Late Show with David Letterman tonight.

Thursday

  • By now we all know Emmitt Smith has won “Dancing with the Stars.” Get the play-by-play on Jimmy Kimmel Live.
  • For fun, follow Thursday’s talk show theme. First, check out Mike Rowe, host of Discovery Channel’s “Dirty Jobs” on The View. Pound for pound, Rowe is one of the sharpest tools in the TV hosting shed. (Is that a mixed metaphor?) Then, tune in to The Oprah Winfrey Show during which Oprah ticks off the top dream jobs we all wish we had. (I wonder if she’ll include hers?)

Friday

  • I gotta go back to Oprah on Friday to catch the TV host’s behind the scenes visit to ABC’s top drama,Grey’s Anatomy.
  • Then I’m setting the DVR to record Late Night with Conan O’Brien for its sheer comic potential. Not only will Martin Short share his unique comedy blend, but Flavor Flav, legendary rapper and star of VH1’s “Flavor of Love,” stops by to chat with Conan.
