Oprah Giveth and Viacom Taketh Away
(Daily Show Clips from YouTube, That Is)

Tuesday October 31, 2006

It was a day of giving and taking away.

Over on The Oprah Winfrey Show’s “Best Giveaway Ever” episode, the stellar host presented $1,000 debit cards to each audience member. But the caveat with the cards is that the audience member had to give the money away to a charitable cause.

It could be one dollar to 1,000 causes or $1,000 to one cause, it just had to be charitable – and not a charitable relative – Oprah explained. Audience members were given cameras to record their giveaway adventure. Results of the philanthropic cinema verite experiment will be broadcast on a later episode.

And while Oprah is in the giving spirit, media giant Viacom Inc. is in the mood to take things away.

Viacom, owner of Comedy Central – and thus owner of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report -- has reportedly asked bucket video web site YouTube to purge its servers of all things Viacom – including clips of previously mentioned shows.

Viacom alleges copyright infringement. It has yet to publicly file any lawsuit. Other media companies, such as NBC and CBS, have signed deals with YouTube.

Comedy Central has also recently announced that full episodes of The Daily Show and The Colbert Report will be available for viewing on Comedy Central’s web site.

As of this posting, several clips were still available, including this one, featuring Jon Stewart and Stephan Colbert.
