Oprah Encourages Everyone to Remember Holocaust Victims, Survivors

Wednesday October 25, 2006

It's a sobering topic for a blog such as this, but Oprah Winfrey's recent speech in Chicago to 3,000 supporters of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum reminds us that history cannot be forgotten -- and that it is imperative we learn from it.

Addressing the crowd, Oprah said she still has not "wrapped her brain" around the horrific events that took place at Auschwitz. The talk show host visited the concentration camp when she traveled to Poland with author, scholar and holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. Orpah chose Wiesel's memior, Night, to be part of her book club. Their visit will be included in an upcoming two-part special.

"Those millions and millions and millions who did not survive want us to never forget the hopes they sacrificed on the killing fields," she told the crowd.

The event is the museum's largest regularly scheduled fundraiser. The museum is located in Washington, D.C.
